London Piccadilly Theatre – Macbeth – 1942 – Sir John Gielgud

A wartime programme from the Piccadilly Theatre, London, dated 15 August 1942, for Shakespeare’s Macbeth, starring John Gielgud with Gwen Davies, Russell Thompson and Frances Ruttledge.

Gielgud was by then the leading classical actor of his generation, and his production brought Shakespeare’s darkest tragedy to the West End during the Second World War.

A record of one of the great Shakespeareans at work, this is a prized piece among old theatre programmes from the 1940s.
