An original programme from the New Theatre, London, 1948, for Shakespeare’s King Richard II, starring Alec Guinness with Mark Dignam, Cecil Winter and James Lytton.
The play charts the fall of the poetic but vain Richard and the rise of his cousin Henry Bolingbroke, and contains John of Gaunt’s famous “This royal throne of kings, this sceptred isle” speech.
Guinness on the classical stage just before his film fame, this is a fine piece among old theatre programmes of the 1940s.
