Did you know?

  • The sailor William and his sweetheart Susan were familiar figures to Victorian audiences from John Gay’s ballad Sweet William’s Farewell to Black-Eyed Susan.
  • Douglas Jerrold’s nautical melodrama Black-Eyed Susan (1829), featuring the sailor William, was one of the biggest stage hits of the nineteenth century.
  • In 1859 the theatre programme was still evolving from the large single-sheet playbill towards the folded programme familiar today.
