Liverpool Royal Court Theatre – Chocolate Soldier – 1940
An original wartime programme for The Chocolate Soldier at the Royal Court Theatre, Liverpool, dated 29 April 1940. The cast includes Doris Francis, Ella Mayne, Bruce Carfax, Olive Rose, Sidney Pointer and Mark Lester.
Oscar Straus’s operetta is based on George Bernard Shaw’s Arms and the Man, in which a pragmatic Swiss mercenary who carries chocolates instead of ammunition wins the heart of a romantic Bulgarian girl.
This is a delightful example of old theatre programmes from the early months of the war.
