London Royal Opera House – Die Meistersinger – 1936
An original programme for Wagner’s Die Meistersinger at the Royal Opera House, London, in 1936.
Wagner’s only mature comedy follows the knight Walther’s quest to win the hand of Eva in a singing contest of the Nuremberg mastersingers, guided by the cobbler-poet Hans Sachs.
The cast includes Rudolf Bockelmann, Ludwig Weber, Herbert Janssen, Roy Devereux, Howard Fry, Margery Booth, Tina Lemnitz and Frank Sale. A starry pre-war Covent Garden cast makes this a fine piece of opera and theatre memorabilia.
