Aberdeen Her Majesty's Theatre – Crusoe The Cruiser – 1894

An original theatre programme for the burlesque opera Crusoe The Cruiser at Her Majesty’s Theatre, Aberdeen, Scotland, dated 20 August 1894. The cast includes Susie Beavan, Dick Fletcher, Ms C Jones and Ms L Fontineau.

A comic musical twist on Daniel Defoe’s castaway story, it is typical of the light-hearted burlesques that toured the Victorian circuit. A scarce Scottish survivor and a collectable example of old theatre programmes from the 1890s.

Did you know?

  • Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe (1719) inspired countless burlesques and pantomimes in the Victorian theatre.
  • Aberdeen’s present His Majesty’s Theatre, designed by Frank Matcham, did not open until 1906, so this programme comes from the city’s earlier playhouse.
