London Folly Theatre – Aladdin – 1881 – Antique Panto Programme

An original Victorian programme for the pantomime Aladdin at the Folly Theatre, London, dated 30 December 1881, at the height of the Christmas panto season.

The cast is led by Miss Carrie Leith, Miss Gregorie Leith, Mr R Mackenzie and James Leith, with what appears to be the whole Leith family on the bill.

Programmes from the 1880s rarely survive, as most were thrown away after the performance, which makes this a fine piece of nineteenth-century theatre memorabilia for collectors of pantomime and Victorian London theatre.

  • The story of Aladdin is not in the oldest Arabic manuscripts of the Arabian Nights; it was added by the French translator Antoine Galland in the early 1700s.
  • Widow Twankey, Aladdin’s pantomime mother, takes her name from a cheap Chinese tea and first appeared in H. J. Byron’s Aladdin burlesque of 1861.
